In the area of directional drilling, it was the usual thing to
deploy
the conventional mud motor. Recently with more difficicult hole
trajectories, new systems such as the rotary steerable systems
9autotracks, powerdrives, etc) were introduced into the market. The
claim was that they deliver smoother holes, less doglegs, better
hole
cleaning, casing getting to bottom, etc. They are however
prohibitively expensive. Is the use of the RSS systems justifiable
in
terms of less NPT, less number of days spent on the well and whether
the intended benefit can outweigh the extra expenditure?. Does
anyone
have a supporting data that compares typical performances of a
conventional mud motor to an RSS?
